Brief overview

In the book «The Anxious Generation», Jonathan Haidt thoroughly examines the reasons for the sharp rise in anxiety and depressive disorders among children and adolescents in recent years. The author links these changes to a transformation of childhood: the decline of free play, increased adult control, and the mass spread of smartphones and social media.

The book draws on a large amount of statistical data and research, clearly showing how the digital environment affects mental health, sleep, attention, and socialization. Special attention is paid to the differences in the impact of social media on girls and boys.

Beyond analyzing the problems, the author offers concrete measures that could help improve the situation, from changes in parenting to collective solutions at the level of schools, the state, and tech companies. Because of this, the book comes across not only as a study, but also as a practical guide.

Opinion

A decent book on child development and the influence of gadgets on them. On the downside: unfortunately, it is examined from only one side, namely — the harm of social media and smartphones, without any examples from the other side, that is, how social media helps people, unites them, and helps build entire businesses not only for adults but also for teenagers. Moreover, there is no real way to verify all the graphs presented, of which there are many, and you have to take the author's word for it.

As for the pros, there are still far more of them than cons. It is impossible not to notice how social media and the internet have changed our lives and the lives of an entire generation of growing children. Many problems are addressed and the psychological disorders these problems can lead to are described in detail. At the same time, solutions for improving psychological indicators are proposed, so this book could be called a practical handbook.
