General Description
The book serves as a comprehensive and systematic guide to building maintainable, scalable, and testable PHP application architecture, using Laravel as a practical example. The author begins by dissecting typical architectural and design mistakes that most often arise in real-world projects: violations of the single responsibility principle, excessive reliance on CRUD mentality, abuse of framework "magic," and the pursuit of pseudo-rapid development at the expense of code quality.
Subsequently, the book progressively immerses the reader in the fundamentals of proper object-oriented architecture: dependency injection, the meaningful use of inheritance, interfaces, traits, and the rejection of static methods where they hinder extensibility and testing. Significant attention is given to practical examples and refactoring of existing code, as well as tools that ease the developer's workflow.
A considerable portion of the book is dedicated to the application layer, error handling, data validation, and building a robust exception system. The author clearly delineates responsibilities between layers, demonstrating how to avoid "smearing" logic across controllers and models. Events, queues, transactions, and their role in constructing reliable business processes are also examined separately.
In the second half of the book, the focus shifts towards more complex architectural approaches: unit testing, the domain layer, CQRS, and Event Sourcing. These chapters provide a holistic perspective on designing intricate systems where business logic becomes the central element and infrastructure becomes secondary. The book is not a gentle introduction and presupposes commercial development experience, yet it offers a coherent picture of modern architectural thinking within the PHP ecosystem.
Opinion
An ambiguous book that evoked the most mixed feelings. On one hand, the OOP proposed by the author in this book appears elegant, easily scalable, and highly testable. On the other hand, after reading books like this, you feel an overwhelming urge to completely stop writing in OOP and fully transition to functional programming.
